Back to School for Your Car Too!

Back to School Road Sign with Dramatic Clouds and Sky.

Although it may still feel like summer time outside, back-to-school time is right around the corner. August is always a busy month for parents and kids. Parents are trying to squeeze in last minute vacations and the kids are wanting to play with their friends all day! One item that is not usually on the top of the to-do list when heading back to school is your vehicle maintenance. Whether you’re attending high school, heading back to college or you’re the chauffeur for your family, your vehicle is going to need a little TLC before heading back to school and work!

Check the Tires

Check the tires for uneven tread wear, nails or other potential hazards. One easy way to check tread depth is inserting a penny into a groove—if any part of Abe Lincoln’s head is obscured, you have enough tread. Check the pressure on each tire with a gauge when they’re cold (not driven). Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s suggested pressure, which is located on most vehicles on a sticker inside the driver’s door, center console, glove compartment lid or in the owner’s manual. Also, make sure the spare tire is inflated and a jack, lug wrench and jumper cables are in the trunk!

Fill-Up the Tank before Empty

Few drivers know that when fuel levels drop below half tank, the remaining gas is more easily evaporated.  Another issue arises when running on a near empty gas tank: the fuel pump will suck up residue that collects in the bottom of the gas tank which will cause fuel pump and fuel system failure.  Save money and improve vehicle fuel economy by ensuring the gas never falls below half tank. This tip is especially important for driving students who are unfamiliar with their tank capacity or average fuel economy.

Up-To-Date

Before your college-bound kiddo hits the road, make sure their vehicle has an up-to-date inspection sticker, car registration, driver’s license and an insurance card. At most colleges, these are the things your child will need in order to purchase a parking tag to be able to park on campus. This may be tedious to check and update, but these are vital things in order to send your child on the road to college!

Making sure you and your college-bound kid’s vehicles are prepared and running smoothly before the hustle and bustle of school starts back up is very important. Doing routine maintenance on your vehicle will not only ensure your safety on the road, but it will also prolong the life of your vehicle! Make sure to schedule a service appointment with one of our certified technicians that will be able to service your vehicle and get you back on the road! 5 Vehicle Tips to Stay Safe this Summer

11

Whether you are heading to the beach with friends, taking a road trip with your family, or commuting back and forth to work, it is important that your vehicle is ready and properly prepared for the summer months. That is why All Star Kia of Baton Rouge has compiled a list of vehicle tips to ensure that you will stay safe this summer!

Get your Vehicle Serviced

Before you get on the road, get your vehicle serviced. Regular maintenance such as oil changes, battery checked and tire rotations will go a long way towards preventing breakdowns. If your vehicle has not been serviced according to Kia’s recommendations, schedule a maintenance checkup with us right away! You can schedule a service appointment by clicking here!

Watch out for Bicycles and Motorcycles

With the warm summer months, more bicycles and motorcycles are on the road and also road workers. Make sure you are keeping an appropriate amount of space between you and a motorcyclist. When going through construction zones, use extreme caution, follow all road signs and look out for pedestrians or workers.

Limit your Distractions

We understand how important it is to stay connected with friends, family and work, but that text message can wait. If you have Bluetooth capabilities in your vehicle, make sure you are using them to your advantage in order to stay hands-free at all times.

Check the Weather

Watch the weather! We know how busy life can get and you have place to go no matter what the weather condition is. However, we recommend that you regularly watch your local weather forecast before hitting the road. If you are caught in an area where there is heavy rain or a severe thunderstorm, slow down, turn on your hazards, pull over – if it is safe to do so – or seek shelter in a restaurant or gas station until you are comfortable to drive again.

Avoid the Glare

Glare from the sun can affect visibility so carry sunglasses in your vehicle with you to wear while driving. If you require glasses, you should consider prescription sunglasses to use while driving. Avoid lenses that darken in strong sunlight.

These are some great tips to remember if you are about to take a long road trip, or just for your daily commutes to work and doing errands! Summer time is a great chance to spend some much needed time with family and friends, but always remember these tips to stay safe this summer and you will be ready for any adventure thrown your way!
